‘REJOICE INWARDLY: Samuel(s) Dreams’
2024

Four site specific 3D printed reliefs mounted in replacement of the standard ventilation chassis partly in reference to ancient cameos.

The imagery depicted is based on two men called Samuel’s dreams juxtapositioned and translated through AI generated images by DALL·E 2. Samuel being an obedient servant and a faithful prophet of the Lord meaning “God has heard“. In this contemporary cameo Samuel is now operating in plural, as a translation between AI (words to image), the subconcious of a cleaner and a dealer sharing the same name.

The definition of b2r means from ”Bach to Rock”. Another understanding of the term is ”Business -to-retailer”. Previously, when pressing the play button for an album on Spotify it auto-shuffled songs instead of playing them in the order an artist intended. The shuffle feature is still available when playing an individual track from an album, but the main play button no longer automatically plays an album’s songs out of order. This changed after Adele criticized the feature on Twitter in 2021.

Since 2015, Spotify’s strategic use of mood and emotion-based targeting through playliusts has found intrusive ways to enter our intimate spheres in its business model. Spotify’s treatment of its mood and emotion data as a form of currency in the greater data marketplace should be considered more generally in the context of the tech industry’s rush to quantify our emotions.

This is a part of an ongoing research project exploring AI-stylized forms of streaming surveillance, the marketing of standardised feelings and moods in relation to the idea history of emotions.
